Classification Description Summary
The Airport Fire Captain- Suppression supervises and directs the activities of a crew of Airport fire personnel assigned to the Airport’s fire station to maintain a state of readiness for response to fire, medical, hazardous materials, and/or other emergency situations on an assigned shift.
The Airport Fire Captain- Suppression is a supervisory level class within the series. The incumbent receives general instruction from the Battalion Chief and is responsible for supervising firefighting and rescue operations related to aircraft incidents, fire suppression, emergency medical response, hazardous materials, and other emergency management, fire inspections, fire investigations, and training activities. In addition, the Airport Fire Captain is responsible for ensuring duties are performed in a safe and prudent manner to best protect life and property.
Essential Functions

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
+ Responds to all alarms in an assigned district and other districts as directed; takes command at emergency incidents and gives assignments to incoming resources; requests upgrades as necessary.
+ Responds to calls for service; works with outside agencies to provide EMS service in the area; works with local EMS agencies, law enforcement agencies, and other professional entities to maintain the protection of the constituents of the City.
+ Develop fire attack and aircraft rescue firefighting plans.
+ Review plans on airport structures requiring necessary approval.
+ Inspect aircraft refueling vehicles and storage areas in accordance with NFPA and FAA directives.
+ Ensure compliance with all City of Reno Fire Department policies, procedures, regulations, and standard operating procedures.
+ Supervises and participates in the laying of hose, placing of ladders, controlling the pressure and direction of water streams, rescue, and salvage operations.
+ Directs the routing and placement of apparatus at emergency scenes.
+ Oversees daily operations of the fire station; coordinates daily crew assignments including cleaning, maintenance, and supply ordering; supervises maintenance of station and equipment.
+ Coordinates and oversees training and mentorship, public outreach, hazard planning, and mitigation; maintains training documentations for assigned crew; ensure training is completed by crews in the station.
+ Prepares and maintains budget information at the company/station level.
+ Enforces policy and procedure at the company level; monitors the health wellbeing of the crew; oversees the safety of the crews and ensures alignment to designated safe methods and practices.
+ Proposes and drafts changes in policy and procedure; analyzes and evaluates current policy and procedure for effectiveness, alignment to regulations, and opportunities for improvement.
+ Performs administrative tasks related to the station; compiles and submits supply orders; maintains accurate and complete files and records; drafts, coordinates, and submits detailed reports to superiors.
+ Resolves personnel issues that arise within the station and with crews; works to maintain crew cohesion, professionalism, and high levels of morale.
+ Performs other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of:
+ Principles, practices, techniques, and apparatus required for fire prevention and suppression.
+ Principles and techniques of providing emergency medical care.
+ Operation and maintenance practices for a variety of fire apparatus and equipment.
+ Principles, practices, and procedures used in a comprehensive airport fire and rescue program.
+ Modern airport fire prevention, fire suppression, and rescue principles, practices, techniques and procedures, includes the operation and maintenance requirements of the various types of fire apparatus equipment, tools, and devices.
+ Fire department standard operating procedures and rules and regulations.
+ Applicable local, state and federal laws, codes, ordinances and regulations.
+ Municipal/private water systems, sprinkler and standpipe systems.
+ Geography of City and location of various fire suppression utilities.
+ Basic mathematics and basic computer applications related to the work.
Ability to:
+ Ability to apply fire service principles, practices, methods, and techniques in emergency incident management and control.
+ Plan and deliver lesson plans and training to assigned personnel.
+ Remain calm, make sound decisions and give accurate and concise reports in emergency situations.
+ Work in a team-based environment to achieve common goals.
+ Meet the physical requirements to safely and effectively perform the assigned duties.
+ Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
+ Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Combinations of education and experience that are equivalent to the following minimum qualifications are acceptable.
Education:
Graduation from high school or equivalent.
Experience:
Seven years of suppression line or all-risk fire experience as a firefighter with the City of Reno or at least three of which have been as a firefighter with the Airport Fire Department.
Substitution:
Associates degree in fire science or a closely related field may substitute for one year of suppression line or all-risk fire experience.
Licenses and Certifications:
+ Must possess a valid Nevada driver's license – Class "A" with an "F" endorsement OR an equivalent out-of-state driver's license.
+ Must possess a Firefighter II certification.
+ Must possess a Hazardous Materials (Haz-Mat) Operations Level certification.
+ Must have completed a recognized EMT certificate program as approved by the Reno Fire Department.
Requirements of the Position:
Must have completed a nationally recognized Incident Safety Officer class, as assigned by the Reno Fire Department within one year of appointment.
Supplemental Information
Physical Demands and Working Environment:
+ Emergency and station environments; exposure to dangerous surroundings, natural and man-made disasters; hazards associated working near traffic.
+ Must be in physical condition to perform fire suppression, emergency medical and prevention duties.
+ Must be able to operate emergency vehicles, apparatus and equipment.
+ Must have verbal communication and reading ability, visual acuity and hearing to perform field duties and ability to work for extended periods in an office or extremes of outdoor environments.
+ Must have ability to perform sustained and vigorous activities in a variety of environmental conditions and tolerate exposure to heat, fumes, smoke, pressurized water and chemicals. Positions are required to work varied shifts including nights, weekends and holidays.
