Smith+Nephew, a pioneering leader in medical technology since 1856, is seeking an Intern – AI for Global Clinical Medical Affairs. As part of the Global Data Analytics department, the successful candidate will be a passionate learner with an innovative mindset, looking to explore how to apply AI/ML and data science technologies to cutting edge clinical research.
The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in data science and deploying AI/ML solutions for real-world problems. The role comes with broad opportunities for learning and to make an impact, and tight collaboration with experts in biostatistics, data science, AI/ML, data management, and clinical operations.
What will you be doing?
Develop and Apply AI to Solve Real Problems:
Collaborate with clinical research experts to identify and deploy use cases for AI in clinical affairs
Assist in developing AI/ML models for supporting clinical operations, and data analysis
Preprocess, clean, and organize clinical datasets to train and support AI/ML applications
Support the integration of AI tools into clinical research workflows
Quality Control and Communication:
Identify key performance indicators for AI models and evaluate performance in uses cases with a global span
Document methodologies, workflows, and results to ensure reproducibility and transparency
Present findings and recommendations to the team and stakeholders clearly and concisely
Advanced Data Analytics & Cloud Data Management:
Work with the clinical data team to link together and leverage thousands of clinical datasets within a cloud infrastructure, to support AI/ML

What will you need to be successful?
Education:
Enrolled in a bachelor's, master’s, or PhD degree in a relevant field (i.e. Data Science, Mathematics, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Computer Engineering).
Experience:
Previous applicable intern, co-op, part-time or apprenticeship experience is preferred
Previous Exposure to clinical research, medical device development, or health care analytics preferred.
Academic knowledge across traditional machine learning, neural networks, and (of course) large language models preferred.
Knowledge of wrangling complex datasets using various cloud tools (AWS, Databricks) preferred
Proficiency in Python is required, and R is a plus
Familiarity with common AI/ML frameworks, e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn, and LLM’s
Familiarity with version control systems, particularly Git
Foundational knowledge of statistics is a plus
Familiarity with business intelligence tools such as PowerBI, Spotfire, Tableau is a plus
Familiarity with cloud technologies such as Amazon AWS and Databricks
Experience in creating and deploying AI/ML models for production use
A knack for innovation and a passion for leveraging technology to solve complex business problems
