Job Description:

The Department of Animal Sciences is seeking an Agricultural Assistant II. This position is responsible for assisting in the daily operations of the Santa Fe Beef Research Unit.  These responsibilities include independent initiative and completion of assigned duties related to but not limited to animal husbandry; forage management; facilities and equipment upkeep; vehicle and equipment operation; assistance with research projects; and supervision of student employees.

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

- Animal Husbandry


Feeding cattle concentrate, hay, and mineral.
Maintain cattle equipment and facilities.
Cattle handling, vaccination, observation, and transportation.
Data collection, record keeping, and research support.
Assist with other cattle management activities as needed.
Understand and follow Beef Quality Assurance guidelines.

- Land Use Programs


Fence construction, maintenance, and repair.
Pasture maintenance, land preparation, weed control, and planting.
Cleaning, maintenance, and repair of facilities. 
General land and water resource management including Best Management Practices. 

- Hay production and harvesting


Inspect for and control weed and insect pests.
Maintain and operate hay harvesting equipment and assist with repairs.
Participate in hay and silage production.

- General Agricultural Responsibilities   


Assists with classes, field trips, programs, and visitors.
Operates trucks, trailers, and heavy equipment.
Provides security for animals and facilities.
Other duties as assigned.

Normal Work Schedule:

Monday through Sunday for a 40 hour work week, with hours adjusted for seasonal, emergencies, harvest time, or research projects.  Rotational weekend and holiday work required.

Expected Salary:

$17 - $19 per hour

Minimum Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalent and two years of relevant experience. Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience. 

Preferred Qualifications:

Ability to operate and maintain farm machinery.
Knowledge of general farming procedures.
Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
Ability to maintain accurate records, and to write legibly.
Knowledge of fence construction.
Ability to calibrate a sprayer and follow pesticide labels.
Knowledge of cattle needs, behavior, and caretaking.                                                                          
Ability to set work priorities and initiative to complete tasks without immediate supervision.
