Reuters is seeking a dynamic, experienced leader to oversee our visual news coverage across sub-Saharan Africa. This role manages video and photography teams, requiring the ability to deliver breaking news, and produce high-impact long-form and feature stories.
About the Role
As our Africa Visuals Editor, you will:
Lead and Develop: Develop and execute a strategic vision for expanding Reuters' video and photography coverage across Africa, significantly increasing our breadth and depth.
Team Management: Lead, mentor, and manage a geographically diverse team of staff and freelancers, creating a collaborative and high-performing environment. Advocate for your team's success and professional development.
Storytelling Excellence: Drive compelling storytelling across diverse topics, including politics, business, culture, climate, environment, and human interest, showcasing fresh perspectives and voices to a global audience.
Breaking News & Feature Reporting: Lead coverage of breaking news, demonstrating agility and decisiveness, while also championing in-depth investigative and long-form pieces.
Collaboration & Innovation: Collaborate effectively with editors and reporters across various locations and formats. Champion innovation in visual storytelling techniques and technologies. Proactively identify and pursue opportunities to enhance our news coverage.
Client & Audience Understanding: Demonstrate a deep understanding of Reuters' client needs and digital audience engagement strategies.
About You
To be our Africa Visuals Editor, you will likely have:
Exceptional journalistic skills with a strong portfolio demonstrating expertise in at least one visual medium (video or photography). Experience leading in both is highly desirable.
Proven ability to manage and mentor large, geographically dispersed teams, including freelancers.
Demonstrated success leading fast-paced breaking news coverage and developing impactful feature stories.
Strong understanding of the African landscape, its diverse cultures, and key socio-political issues.
Familiarity with current visual storytelling technologies and digital platforms.
Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills.
