Position Summary

The Affiliate Clinical Instructor is a joint Kootenai Health employee and ISU School of Nursing Affiliate Clinical Instructor for the School of Nursing (SON). This position is responsible for teaching and evaluating students in the simulation lab and clinical settings. The clinical instructor works under the direction of the KH/ISU Affiliate Clinical Assistant Professor to execute the learning plan for the clinical experience. Clinical instructors support, execute, and inform primary course faculty regarding curriculum design, implementation, and effectiveness. Clinical instructors role model professional practice, guide students to apply knowledge in patient care and ensure student learning effectiveness in direct patient care clinical settings. Clinical instructors are liaisons between Kootenai Health, the SON undergraduate program, and the clinical site, developing and fostering positive relationships and learning environments for students. This position reports jointly to the Center for Nursing Excellence director at Kootenai Health and the Director for Undergraduate Studies in Nursing in the ISU SON or as delegated.

 

Responsibilities

•    Reviews and understands the course objectives, both classroom and clinical, and applies the teaching techniques to achieve course and program objectives best

•    Models effective oral and written communication that engages the students provides clarity and improves student learning

•    Discusses with students their concerns and/or problems directly or indirectly related to the learning experience

•    Assists the student in developing and demonstrating the values, attitudes, and ideals appropriate to the nursing profession

•    Establishes and maintains relationships with clinical site staff and leaders

•    Participates in faculty meetings and activities

•    Provides clinical, classroom, and clinical simulation lab instruction when needed

•    Supervises and directs care provided by a group of students (usually 6 to 10 students in a group) in the clinical environment

•    Coordinates with clinicians at the clinical site to make student patient assignments

•    Orients students to the clinical area and demonstrates proper procedures

•    Leads discussions and elicits information from students that demonstrate that students are learning and accomplishing the clinical objectives using the Socratic method to connect theory principles with clinical judgment

•    Teaches students how to perform duties in the clinical site and answers their questions

•    Maintains clinical standards and course expectations throughout each course or term

•    Evaluates and grade student performance and assignments

•    Maintains the professional practice knowledge base needed to instruct learners in contemporary nursing practice

•    Communicates with the Lab Coordinator or Program Coordinator as necessary to resolve issues or concerns in clinical areas

•    Works effectively as part of the overall faculty team, demonstrating positive interpersonal relations, collaborating with other faculty members to meet student needs, participating in faculty meetings, and nursing program committees, and responding to requests from management

•    Participates in ongoing program development and evaluation activities as needed 

•    Participates in professional development activities

•    Performs other related duties as assigned

•    Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the field 

•    Regular and predictable attendance is an essential job function

•    Competent to meet age-specific needs of the unit assigned

•    Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals

 

Requirements and Minimum Qualifications

•    State of Idaho Registered Nurse OR licensure pending as documented by temporary licensure OR current RN licensure from a state participating in the “multistate privilege to practice” compact with Idaho prior to start date

•    BSN required 

•    3 years’ experience in hospital-based care setting

•    Experience precepting or mentoring student nurses preferred

•    Evidence of experience with competency-based education preferred

•    Ability to work across professional specialties and a variety of age groups

•    Strong oral and written English communication skills

•    BLS required

 

Working Conditions

•    Exposure to needles, blood, and body fluids, etc. 

•    Must be able to assist in patient transfer 

•    Must be able to maintain a standing position 

•    Must be able to reach arms above or below shoulder height 

•    Typical equipment used in a clinical job
