Advocacy & Litigation Attorney

All members of AARP’s OGC advise business units and affiliated entities to serve the goals and mission of the organization in a manner that is compliant, ethical, solution-oriented and timely; consult and collaborate with management to develop strategic plans and ensure organizational activities meet legal and regulatory compliance; and work collaboratively to accomplish organization goals and execute on organization mission. We are seeking an Advocacy & Litigation Attorney to provide legal counsel and representation for internal clients in civil litigation and various legal proceedings. Responsibilities include case preparation, trial preparation, reviewing and advising on amicus briefs, managing discovery, and engaging in negotiations and mediations. The attorney also supports the enterprise advocacy and regulatory compliance efforts, and offers support and guidance to clients and stakeholders. Responsibilities Provides timely and accurate information, legal advice, representation in litigation or non-litigation matters, referral, self-help materials, guidance, and/or other assistance to eligible clients within and related to the attorney’s practice area. Engages in or supports systemic advocacy related to the attorney’s area of expertise. Conducts community outreach, education, and training events. Provides guidance, refers cases, and monitors work of pro bono attorneys, volunteers, law students, and legal support staff on assigned cases. Develops and maintains expertise in primary areas of responsibility. Collaborates with other legal services advocates, clients, and community leaders on systemic issues. Participates as a member of practice area teams and on cross-organizational working groups to develop innovative approaches to enhance service delivery for organization clients. Qualifications JD with a minimum 3 years of experience in legal research or litigation support role. Knowledge and/or experience working in the advocacy, regulatory, or lobbying field. Proven experience managing litigation. Experience crafting responses to subpoenas and conducting document reviews. Ability to maintain legal files in databases. Experience organizing legal or regulatory matters and/or cases. Experience assisting in various phases of litigation, to include trial prep. Admitted to practice, active member, in good standing in a state Bar, with the ability to practice as an in-house attorney in the District of Columbia.
