The Georgetown University Prisons and Justice Initiative (PJI) connects people affected by mass incarceration with opportunities to shape their own futures. PJI’s programs offer a Georgetown education to incarcerated students, turning carceral spaces into college classrooms. Through transformational liberal arts courses, incarcerated scholars expand their thinking, engage with their peers, challenge themselves academically, and build self-confidence. PJI aims to empower currently and formerly incarcerated people as scholars, leaders, professionals, entrepreneurs, and advocates who can break cycles of incarceration and strengthen communities. Grounded in Georgetown’s commitment to social justice, PJI also serves to engage the wider university community in understanding the causes and responding to the consequences of mass incarceration, one of the most pressing crises of our time.

The Administrative Coordinator for Prison Education at the Prisons and Justice Initiative at Georgetown University will provide essential administrative support for the Prisons and Justice Initiative’s two higher education in prison programs: the Prison Scholars Program at the DC Jail, and the BLA Program at the Patuxent Institution in Maryland. The Administrative Coordinator, Prison Education is initially a one-year term position in the Prisons and Justice Initiative at Georgetown University College of Arts & Sciences. Duties include but are not limited to:

Assist with admissions, course creation, enrollment, faculty appointments, and other administrative university processes alongside appropriate university offices and staff (including but not limited to the Student Financial Services office, Registrar’s Office, and Deans’ Offices).

Procure supplies and books, completing and maintaining associated university financial forms and records.

Coordinate, track, and maintain records of communication with internal and external partners and stakeholders.

Update program and academic calendars each semester, scheduling, attending, and recording/disseminating notes for program meetings.

Enter, manage, and distribute student, faculty, and course records (including course evaluation responses and results).

Assist with faculty onboarding, and facility access requests for staff and faculty, coordinating and providing support to faculty, TAs, and program staff.

Collect and track documentation for required trainings for BLA, coordinating research requests from BLA/Scholars students.

Work Interactions

The Administrative Coordinator for Prison Education at PJI will report directly to Director of Education. This individual will also work closely with both the Program Manager for the Prison Scholars Program and the Associate Director of the BLA Program as well as the Site Coordinators for both facilities who report to them. Where there is overlap in duties, the Program Manager for the Prison Scholars program will be the primary POC for that program, while this role will be the primary for the BLA program. This position will not directly supervise any other staff positions, but may at times lead/direct the work of undergraduate and graduate student workers at PJI supporting the prison education programs. The Administrative Coordinator will communicate and collaborate with staff and faculty in other centralized university offices such as the Office of the University Registrar, Student Financial Services Office, Deans Offices for the College of Arts and Science and School of Continuing Studies, Human Resources, etc.

Requirements and Qualifications

Associates degree required, bachelor's degree strongly preferred

2+ years work experience, or equivalent education; 3 or more years work experience preferred

Strong organizational and project management skills

Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize appropriately

Excellent professional communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with a team

Experience with data entry and database maintenance

Critical attention to detail and accuracy in records management

Knowledge of/experience working in prison education and/or reentry programming

Experience working in prison education or closely related field preferred

Knowledge of/experience in higher education administration preferred

Pay Range:

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:

$20.16 - $31.30

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
