Accounting Technician
Summary This position is a career ladder structure to the full performance level of Accounting Technician, GS-7. The position performs a variety of duties which includes three areas of responsibility: (1) Accounting Support, (2) Agent Cashier Support, and (3) Accounts Receivable Support. The position will also be cross trained on all three areas of responsibility to include functional rotations. The Accounting Technician provides technical assistance, support, and maintenance of accounting records. Responsibilities Major duties include, but not limited to: Examines, verifies, and maintains financials accounts and accounting data; Determines general ledger accounts, journals, and subsidiary accounts affected; Maintains control of receipts and disbursements; Ensures the timely preparation of reports for Department of Treasury, VA Headquarters, and local management; Performs audits as required by Fiscal Service regulations; Monitors and makes input to current vendor file so that vendors may be paid promptly under the FMS system; Performs Fiscal Daily Review, resolve error messages and rejects, and perform various accounting utilities; Responsible for completing tasks associated with the recovery of receivables such as payments made in error, overpayments made to vendors or benefit recipients, items rejected and returned, etc; Prepare write-offs and waiver request in compliance with Debt Collection Manual Procedures; and Prepare monthly reports for management. Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm (Subject to change based on the needs of the agency.). You may qualify based on your experience as described below: Specialized Experience at the GS-6: Experience using various accounting, budget, and/or financial system software applications and computer system to include Microsoft Excel; Accounting-related terminology and account codes relating to an automated system; Work with cost centers and fund control points; Prepare and review financial documents to verify accounting date and necessary entries; Balance and reconcile accounts and records; Collect and compile financial data to prepare reports; Validate transactions and perform research to resolve inconsistencies; Enter financial transactions into an automated data management system; Process and verify invoices; and Use of a "10-key" (numerical pad) is desired.
