About the Indiana State Board of Accounts (SBOA): The Indiana State Board of Accounts provides the citizens of Indiana with complete confidence in the integrity and financial accountability of state and local government. We also provide accurate and reliable information to the legislature and other interested parties. For more than 100 years, we have held government officials accountable to their constituents for financial reporting by following the Indiana Code when making decisions related to taxpayer dollars. Role Overview: The Accountant Supervisor works with agency personnel and other agencies to solve discrepancies. You will advise the director or high-level management on the status and maintenance of all assigned accounts. You will coordinate with state and federal agencies to exchange information and to ensure proper accounting procedures. Work is usually reviewed by the Director for soundness of judgment and consistency with overall agency policy. Salary: This role traditionally starts at $47,320 but may be commensurate with education and experience. A Day in the Life: Responsibilities include: + Prepare, examine, or analyze accounting records, financial statements, or other financial reports to assess accuracy, completeness, and conformance to reporting and procedural standards. + Analyze business operations, trends, costs, revenues, financial commitments, and obligations to project future revenues and expenses or to provide advice. + Assist the supervisor with budgets, preparing periodic reports that compare budgeted costs to actual costs. + Advise the controller or supervisor on the status of assigned accounts. + Assist in the development of general policies for a fiscal program. + Assist management in the preparation of agency or program area budget requests. + Reconcile complex discrepancies between accounts and the appropriate department or supervisor of errors. + Prepare reports for reconciliation of grant-funded accounts. + Analyze financial statements and reports for accuracy. + Serve as liaison between the agency and the federal government or other funding source for assigned account. + Coordinate computerized accounting system within assigned area. + Control the flow of appropriated funds. + Direct the work of lower-level accountants and account clerks assisting in complex or unusual situations. + Recruit, select, onboard, and train employees to ensure role responsibilities and expectations are clearly understood while providing opportunities to continue professional development. + Set expectations, measure progress, provide ongoing feedback, and evaluate the performance of employees. What You'll Need for Success: + Thorough knowledge of the theories, principles, and practices of governmental accounting, budgeting, and auditing. + Thorough knowledge of fund accounting and grant reconciliation. + Thorough knowledge of federal and state accounting and bookkeeping laws, policies, and procedures. + Thorough knowledge of the state government organization and function. + Thorough knowledge of automated accounting systems. + Ability to solve complex accounting methods and procedures to meet agency needs. + Ability to prepare budgets. + Ability to develop effective work relationships. + Ability to prepare and interpret complex financial statements and reports. + Ability to reconcile discrepancies between accounts. + Ability to delegate work, set clear direction, and manage workflow. + Ability to effectively give feedback, provide guidance or corrective action, coach, and develop employee skillsets. + Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
