Description We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Accessibility Designer to join our team on a contract and project-basis. The ideal candidate will be responsible for ensuring that InDesign and PDF files are fully accessible, adhering to accessibility standards and compliance guidelines. This role requires an expert understanding of accessibility principles, especially in the creation of documents that meet ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act), Section 508, and WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) standards for accessibility. Key Responsibilities: + Accessibility Design and Development: + Collaborate with designers and content creators to modify and adapt InDesign files to meet accessibility standards. + Ensure accurate tagging, structure, and formatting of content within PDF documents to optimize screen reader usability and navigation. + PDF Accessibility: + Remediate existing PDF files using Adobe Acrobat tools and other relevant software to achieve full compliance with accessibility standards. + Perform quality assurance checks to ensure documents are compatible with assistive technologies like screen readers, text-to-speech software, and other tools. + Document Workflow Optimization: + Develop and implement workflows and best practices for creating accessible documents from InDesign. + Provide guidance to team members on designing templates and layouts that prioritize accessibility from the outset. + Standards Compliance: + Monitor and implement current legal and regulatory requirements, including Section 508 and WCAG 2.1, as they pertain to document accessibility. + Stay up to date with changing accessibility regulations and best practices. + Testing and Feedback: + Conduct thorough accessibility testing on completed documents to verify compliance and usability for individuals with disabilities. + Gather and incorporate feedback from stakeholders, end-users, and accessibility consultants to ensure deliverables meet expectations. Requirements Skills and Qualifications: + Proficiency in InDesign: Advanced knowledge of Adobe InDesign and experience in creating accessible templates and exporting accessible PDFs. + PDF Remediation: Expertise in Adobe Acrobat, including tagging, reading order adjustments, OCR (optical character recognition), and form field accessibility. + Accessibility Standards Knowledge: Strong understanding of ADA, Section 508, and WCAG 2.1 (AA or higher) guidelines. + Assistive Technology Compatibility: Familiarity with tools such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and other screen-reading technologies. + Attention to Detail: Meticulous attention to formatting, structure, alt-text descriptions, and tagging to ensure accessibility. + Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to troubleshoot complex accessibility challenges and develop creative, user-friendly solutions.
