Essential functions (job duties): This Academic Services Officer I/II plays a vital role in ensuring the successful integration of new students into Wayne State University. This position involves collaborating with a campus partners to design and implement support programs for students during the summer prior to their matriculation through the end of their first-year. Reporting to and in partnership with the Sr. Director for College Transition and Strategic Retention Initiatives, this role will also coordinate the successful delivery of prefirst year experiences, helping to foster a supportive and enriching environment for students as they embark on their college journey. Essential Functions: + Select, train & oversee a group of first-year volunteers that will help to inform strategies and support academic and social programming + Establish partnerships with campus partners that amplify the needs of first-year students in transition + Coordinate community builders and networking opportunities to deepen community and academic confidence during a student’s transition to WSU + Maintain engagement with student informational sessions, recruitment process and new student orientation; deliver presentations students and families + Partner with academic departments, student services and key campus partners to enhance support for students in transition to WSU + Participate in unit and/or University committees centering student success during a student’s college transition + Prepare written and oral reports inclusive of updates in the work and student outcomes + Continuously develop knowledge of best practices, policies and procedures, technological tools, etc. regarding program population needs; + Perform duties centering student success and the first-year transition as outlined with the Sr. Director, College Transition and Strategic Retention Initiatives + Develop and maintain 2-3 communications modalities to keep students informed about available resources and events. + Collect and analyze feedback from participants to assess program outcomes and make data-driven improvements Qualifications: + Bachelor’s degree in education, human services or social/behavioral sciences required for an Academic Services Officer I. + A Master’s degree in higher education, counseling, student affairs or related field for an Academic Services Officer II. + At least three year of experience (professional) in student supervision/advising and program leadership experience. + Strong commitment to inclusive and equitable student success. + Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively with others by phone, email, interpersonally, or in small and large group presentations. + Excellent organizational and analytical skills. + High degree of proficiency with standard office productivity software, especially MS Office 365. + Must be available to work evening and weekend hours as needed. + Ability to relate well and establish rapport with students, other staff, faculty, parents, and community. + Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students of varying levels of academic preparedness. + Ability to work with and without supervision and in consultation with experienced colleagues. Preferred qualifications: Knowledge of transition experience programming, holistic support programs, peer mentor training programs, etc. Ability to communicate across large bodies of prospective and incoming students. Strengths in long-term planning, attention to detail and working with a campus network. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment, both in person and virtually. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Master’s degree in education, Counseling, or related field. Five years of experience in student support, student success, development, education, or academic advising.
