**The Department of Psychology has an outstanding opportunity for a Director of Academic Services to join their team.**
The Director-Academic Services is the administrative head for the Psychology undergraduate advising office. The incumbent directs all activities of the Psychology Undergraduate Advising Office and creates short term and long range plans to assure that the large variety of activities in the office are completed in a timely manner. This position is responsible for overseeing student advising and outreach, planning and leading programmatic services for students, facilitating the admissions process, supervising academic services staff, and fostering collaboration and partnerships to support program and student success. This includes drafting necessary reports, establishment and review of the undergraduate curriculum, and enrollment management.
**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES** Advising Students (35%)
+ Advise and counsel declared majors, prospective majors, high school students, transfer students, prospective applicants to graduate programs, parents and other members of the community. Able to establish rapport with a variety of constituents. Advise 1,000 to 1,200 diverse undergraduate psychology majors from the Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Science programs regarding academic requirements. Knowledgeable about the diverse requirements for each degree program and accurately present them to students and other constituents. Communicate to students, faculty and staff the educational philosophy of the university, college and department. Make policy and requirement decisions on behalf of the department for students in unusual circumstances. Collaborate with faculty departmental honors program director to assist participating students. Counsel students on academic warning or probation and students experiencing academic difficulty regarding study skills and provides resources to help them find success. Advise students coming from diverse backgrounds and bringing a wide range of life experiences. Advise interested students on graduate school preparation and career planning. Refer students to offices and resources on campus and in the community as appropriate.Programmatic Responsibilities (40%)
+ Serve as a member of the department Curriculum Committee, Undergraduate Awards Committee, and the Diversity Advocacy Team. Advise department Undergraduate Associate Chair and Curriculum Coordinator on curriculum and quarterly course scheduling. Create and initiate new academic programs for undergraduates as the need arises and coordinate these programs with the instructional faculty. Serve as resource to department faculty, graduate students, teaching assistants and staff.
+ Coordinate and direct summer and winter orientation sessions for incoming transfer students in collaboration with UW First Year Programs office. Designs fall quarter class, PSYCH 299, for the new transfer students (roughly 70-80 students enrolled).
+ Administer end-of-program assessment for the Psychology Department. Monitor distribution of online questionnaire to approximately 550 students per year and review responses. Present accurate summary of results to department faculty, the university and community. Complete statistical analyses of undergraduate majors and applicants for the major and advise department Chair, Associate Chair and faculty on issues related to undergraduate students. Responsible for all data collection and analysis regarding undergraduates for any departmental review process (such as department ten year self study). Provide consultation on the interpretation of data. Report statistics on the undergraduate program within the department and university and to the outside community.
+ Direct and manage all aspects of annual selection process for several undergraduate scholarships. Depending on the requirements of each scholarship fund this may include: identifying and communicating with potential applicants who meet specific requirements, development of selection criteria, bringing together and guiding selection committees, communicating with the Office of Student Financial Aid regarding eligibility of potential recipients, and gathering information from students selected to include in departmental publications and social media. Serve as point person for nomination of students for several annual college and university awards.
+ Responsible for content related to the undergraduate portion of the Department semi-annual newsletter, including interviewing undergraduates and writing spotlight articles. Provide information to be included in a regular e-newsletter that is complied by a Senior Academic Counselor and sent to all psychology majors.
+ Coordinate and oversee all aspects of the annual departmental undergraduate graduation ceremony with an overall attendance of roughly 4,000 students and guests. This includes selection of keynote speakers.Personnel Management (10%)
+ Supervises two 1.0 FTE Senior Academic Counselors, and one 1.0 FTE Program Coordinator (curriculum coordinator). Initiate hiring process, coordinating with department Administrator and department faculty. Screen candidates and conduct interviews; make recommendation for hiring. Negotiate salary of new employees. Train staff in all aspects of their positions. Conduct annual performance evaluations of professional and classified staff. Make reclassification recommendations. Manage any and all disciplinary actions together with department and HR Consultant. Resolve complaints and grievances. Schedules and conducts office staff meetings.University Service (15%)
+ The incumbent is a member of ad hoc college and university policy committees concerning undergraduate education. As a representative of one of the largest departments in the College of Arts and Sciences, is frequently consulted on the impact of requirement and procedure changes in the university. Serve as liaison and resource to advisors in other departments, university administrators, community college advisors and faculty and the general public. Work with state community colleges to clarify articulation of transfer courses. Inform community colleges colleagues of changes to department courses and requirements that will impact their transferring students. **MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS**
+ Master’s degree in education, psychology, counseling or related field. Minimum two years experience as an academic advisor or related position. **Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.** **ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS**
+ Proficiency with most Microsoft Office tools.
+ Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
+ Experience with statistical analysis.
+ Strong organizational skills.
+ An intentional desire to work with people of various racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
+ Desire to collaborate.
+ Self-motivated and able to take initiative on tasks/projects. **DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS**
+ Supervisory experience.
+ Experience working in a research oriented institution.
+ Prior student advising or student and academic experience in a higher education setting.
+ Understanding of UW’s academic advising resources.
+ Familiarity with the UW advising guidelines, tools, and resources.
+ Familiarity with Canvas and other learning technology platforms. **CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT**
