Job Summary:

The post focuses on the training and development of academic literacy (such as academic reading and writing, digital literacy, critical thinking, and reasoning) for students in science. It requires close interaction with academic staff in relation to embed academic literacies development within the context of different disciplines in science. These duties are primarily focused on working both directly with students, and supporting lecturers, addressing language barriers, cultivating critical thinking skills and promoting effective and ethical research and writing practices in the Faculty of Science.


Brief Description

Minimum Requirements:

A Master s qualification in science education or education (where a focus on academic literacy at tertiary level would be preferable).

Four years language, teaching and guidance experience.

A teaching qualification or education diploma would be an advantage.

Prior experience in teaching, editing, academic writing or drafting is preferred.

Key Competencies:

Experience in teaching/training individuals in constructing arguments and academic writing.

Experience working with a team and a strong commitment to teaching/training at an undergraduate level.

Demonstrate a creative approach to the skills development of students from diverse backgrounds.

Development of support structures and programmes for students via appropriate educational tools.

Display the ability to apply analytical thinking to the analysis of data; this data will be relevant to the academic environment and hence experience in academia research would be advantageous.

Prior experience in working with writing intensive course development and content. development aimed at improving an individual s writing skills.

Experience in working as a facilitator/consultant/writing fellow in writing intensive courses.

Ability to work with a diverse student population is preferred.

Experience in diverse academic environments is preferred.

Duties:

Surveying and establishing academic support structures and providing academic literacy interventions, as required for supporting students in each discipline in the Faculty of Science.

Development and delivery of relevant academic literacy development workshops and programmes

Development of excellent critical literacy science students (undergraduate in particular) through workshops and discipline-embedded support.

Provide support for postgraduate students writing development, through one-on-one consultations and facilitation of writing retreats

Conduct research into academic literacy to inform academic literacy support practice and initiatives.
