Brief Description

The School of Clinical Medicine in the Faculty of Health Sciences seeks to appoint an Academic Head of obstetrics and gynaecology. The school invites applicants from the existing joint staff and beyond. The Academic Head of obstetrics and gynaecology will be an outstanding physician and an eminent authority in the field of obstetrics and gynaecology or its subspecialties and encompassing its clinical practice, teaching and research in its clinical aspects and in the scientific disciplines that form its basis. The appointee will be expected to make innovative and distinctive contributions to leadership in education, research and clinical practice in the University of the Witwatersrand, School of Clinical Medicine and the Department of obstetrics and gynaecology.

The post is embedded in the University and its terms and conditions of employment. Remuneration is commensurate with a Clinical Head of Department and the same benefits apply (cost to company). The incumbent will have the opportunity for clinical responsibilities within their field of practice, on the broader clinical platform for not more than 20% of the time.

The incumbent must demonstrate proven excellence in leadership and service, research and research training, teaching and learning and social engagement.

The incumbent will serve on the SOCM executive and provide leadership within the school in general.


Qualifications:

Registration as a Specialist Physician Research experience is a pre-requisite and possession of a PhD or strong track record of publications of original research.At least 10 years experience in obstetrics and gynaecology and in university administration at a senior level are essential requirements.The applicant must have excellent leadership, interpersonal and managerial skills and should have attained sufficient academic and professional standing to command the respect of the members of the department.The preferred candidate must be appointable at the level of Associate / Adjunct Professor or Full Professor in the University of the Witwatersrand.The successful candidate will be appointed as a Head of Department for a fixed term of 5 years, renewable for an additional five years based on performance.
Duties:Provide the academic vision and leadership required to enable the department to establish and maintain a position of excellence within the Department and in the wider educational context.Ensure the transparency of decision-making processes except where confidentiality is essential to protect an individual or the interests of the department. The head also has a duty to consult staff members throughout the department, formally or informally, in order to ensure that policies and important decisions are properly canvassed and debated.Maintenance of academic excellence in teaching and researchDevelopment and implementation of teaching and learning programmes within the department s discipline/s and the promotion of inter-disciplinary co- operation and innovation.Maintaining teaching and examining standards within the departmentSetting research priorities, developing research partnerships, and building research capacity within the relevant fieldsEnsuring that the department meets its teaching commitments, both undergraduate and postgraduateEstablishing, maintaining, and extending the department 's contact with other academic and research institutions and with the related professionsPromoting social responsibility and awareness, and engagement with external stakeholdersEnsuring the optimal utilization of resources (human, financial and infrastructural) to meet the school's short- and long-term academic goalsPromote staff development and manage staff performance and assessment within the department.Provide support to the Academic Divisions that are part of the academic Department of obstetrics and gynaecologyWork with Academic Divisional heads to ensure sound financial and personnel managementEncourage collaboration between departments working across the teaching platformsSet norms and standards for the maintenance of service delivery and quality outputs in the department.Further the mission and vision of the Faculty, School of Clinical Medicine and the Department of obstetrics and gynaecology.


The awarding of the title Professor/Associate Professor/Adjunct Professor will depend on the successful candidate s qualifications, research and other academic criteria as determined by the faculty guidelines.
