Main Purpose:
The primary outcomes of this job are to assist Students with Disabilities registered with the Disability Rights Unit. This will be inclusive of matters relating to assessment referrals, support, training and researching new advancements in the field.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership of services for students with disabilities related to Neurodiversity as well as students with documented psychological disabilities
To act as the first point of contact for enquiries relating to the needs of students with disabilities.
To support disabled students to be successful in achieving their learning goals.
To prepare support plans for students and ensure that these are effectively implemented and monitored.
To provide individual and group support to students as required
Development and implementation of programmes to assist students to cope and acquire necessary skills including a learning strategies manual for students registered with DRU.
To plan for the transition of students registered with DRU into and out of university for successful transition into the workplace.
Screening of concession applications for Disability
To undertake initial individual screening to assess eligibility for extra time and other concessions and advise accordingly.
Administering individual applications.
To carry out detailed screening to determine indicators and/or referral to private practitioners for full psycho-educational assessment.
Liaise with external specialists to organise and develop assessments and ensure proper feedback arrangements are in place.
Support for and communication with School s staff and external organisations (Awareness and Advocacy)
Make recommendations and liaise with the Campus Health and Wellness Centre (CHWC) and Schools regarding individual students and accommodations needed.
To inform and update School staff to enable them to work effectively with students with disabilities by ongoing presentations to Schools as well as individual sessions.
Participate in orientation presentations, focusing on services for disabilities related to students and students with disabilities.
To supply faculties with the information which supports students to gain exam concessions and adjustments.
Update teaching suggestions guide for tutors and staff online.
To keep up to date with any external and internal information and guidance relating to the provision of additional learning support and other student-related issues.
To develop systematic links with other University departments to ensure that the needs of the students and the additional learning support service are met.

To develop and maintain accurate administrative records, statistical data and reports.
Research & General
The field of Disability and the impact and handling thereof in Higher Education South Africa requires more research. Without research, students with Disabilities will remain at risk.
o Conduct relevant research necessary for the Disability Rights Unit s effective and efficient management of its students; all research-related functions
Support the Head when requested and take on ad-hoc tasks.
Editing of material when requested.
Assist at reception ad-hoc when requested.
Requirements:
Masters degree in Psychology, or related Graduate professional degree (NQF8/9)
Minimum 4 years of work-related experience.
Preferences:
Ability to communicate effectively with people with different disabilities.
Knowledge of disability studies.
