Description: Plan and perform a wide variety of operations to prepare and paint parts, assemblies, installations and complete aircraft to produce an aerodynamically smooth and flawless surface appearance.
Typical Responsibilities
Follow specifications, drawings, operation sheets and specific instructions to prepare surfaces and spray paint to produce high grade finishes on aircraft and parts.
Prepare and apply filler compounds to build up or fill holes, dents, scratches, breaks, joints or other surface flaws: shape, smooth and blend filler material to surrounding surface using floats, rasps, sanders, buffers and other hand or power tools.
Follow prescribed procedures for the application of primers, undercoats and finishes to achieve uniform coverage, proper blending, etc., within thickness and weight limitation specified.
Follow best practices of the trade to spray smooth, even coats while working from scaffolding, staging, stands, creeper, etc., insuring specified coverage on areas not easily accessible.
Correct for any adverse conditions affecting spray operations such as humidity, temperatures, improper pressures, etc.
Follow drawings and specifications to layout and paint customers’ identification and distinctive insignia, and to prepare and apply pounce patterns, decalomania, stencils and other marking and identifying data.
Perform any necessary repair operations to attain required flawless high grade surface finish, such as sand, scuff, rub, and blend out scratches, correct for sags, runs, orange-peel, blisters, blush and other imperfections.
Occasionally, as workflow demands, direct up to five helpers in the preparation of aircraft for paint, masking, taping, stripping, caulking, touch-up, etc.
Maintain painting equipment in proper operating condition.
Refer only unusual situations to Foreman.
Follow all rules and regulations pertaining to environmental health and safety.
As required, segregate waste material and follow good housekeeping practices.
Basic Qualifications:
Requires thorough knowledge of shop practices, including techniques employed in metal finishing and painting. Ability to read drawings and follow engineering specifications as well as knowledge of the application of paints and metal finishes. Equivalent to 4 years of high school plus 2 to 3 years trades training.
