30 hp – The Influence of Surface Texture on Press Fit Behaviour and Torsional Strength: A Parametric Study
Introduction
Scania is currently transforming from a traditional truck manufacturer into a comprehensive provider of sustainable transport solutions. Writing your thesis with us presents a unique opportunity to connect with Scania and cultivate future relationships. Many of our team members began their careers at Scania through their degree projects. Are you eager to be part of the shift towards sustainable transport? Join us in building a sustainable future together!
Background
Press fits, or interference fits, are critical components in engineering, used to assemble parts tightly without the need for additional fasteners. This method relies on the precise alignment and mechanical interaction between mating surfaces. The effectiveness of a press fit is significantly influenced by surface texture, which includes parameters such as roughness, waviness etc., Understanding the relationship between surface texture and press fit performance is essential for optimizing design, quality and manufacturing processes. Each roughness parameter contributes to the performance of press fits, highlighting the need for a deeper insight into how surface roughness affects both press-fit and torsional strength.
Objective
The objective of this parametric study is to systematically evaluate the impact of various surface texture parameters on press fit performance and torsional strength. This study aims to:
Assess the Influence of Surface Texture: Investigate how different roughness parameters affect the mechanical performance of press fits Establish Empirical Correlations: Develop empirical correlations that relate specific surface texture characteristics to press fit performance metrics. These correlations will facilitate predictive modelling.
Scope of this thesis
Study aims to investigate the press fits through testing and to establish and verify empirical correlations. The tasks involved include:
Conducting a literature review Developing a test matrix with surface parameters Establishing empirical correlations between surface texture and press forces Performing torsion tests to correlate surface texture with torsional strength Compiling the reportPrototyping center, along with test facilities and rigs, will be available for the verification process.
